Care at home

Brushing and Flossing
Brushing twice daily, and flossing at least once a day, will prevent your teeth and gums from possible problems. Brushing 3 times a day after each meal is perfect; however, do not brush too often, as compulsive brushing can aggravate the gums and cause erosion of enamel. Brushing should be done in a gentle, circular motion that should last for 2-3 minutes, without missing to brush the inner surfaces of teeth where it is harder to reach. Try to brush each tooth one by one, preferably in front of the mirror to make sure you are not missing any spots.

Brushing your tongue gently with your toothbrush, or a tongue brush, is an effective way of removing bacteria and keeping your breath fresh.

Flossing is vital, as it removes food and plaque which a toothbrush cannot reach. If you are not flossing, you are missing a significant area of your teeth.

Toothbrush and Toothpaste
Choosing a toothbrush can sometimes be confusing, if you look at the ever-increasing options available. Toothbrushes come in a variety of sizes, shapes, angles, and firmness. Power toothbrushes are very popular, too. The fact is that the technique is more important than spending money on fancy toothbrushes. Therefore, a manual toothbrush is just fine, as long as you are brushing properly. A power one might not be as effective if you are not using it correctly.

Choose a toothbrush that is not too big, so it reaches the sides, back, and inner surfaces of your teeth, and the bristles should be soft enough so they don’t damage the gums. It all depends on what you need for your best benefit. A toothbrush needs to be replaced once it has lost its natural flexibility, and when the bristles start to bend apart.

It is a good idea to ask your dentist to show you where you tend to be missing brushing, so you will know how you can improve on brushing techniques and choosing the right toothbrush.

Fluoride toothpaste is recommended, as fluoride strengthens teeth and prevents cavities. Our water contains the right amount of fluoride, so it is a good idea to drink tap water (for your teeth) than bottled water.
